Do you want to save money, while traveling in a more sustainable way? Plus create some local connections at the same time?
Or perhaps you’re a home owner who want to save money on home or pet care while out traveling?
Then I have some great news for you! House sitting checks all of the above boxes, and has rapidly become the hottest new travel trend. Especially among budget travelers – homeowners and house sitters alike!
What Is House Sitting?
If you came here to find a Housecarers review, you probably already know about housesitting.
But if you don’t, let me do some explaining: House sitting is letting someone live in your home while you’re away. In exchange for free accommodation, the house sitter will perform specified duties to care for your home and pets. The duties can include lawn maintenance, cleaning the pool, taking care of the pets, forwarding mail, and more.
In addition, a house sitter is a great crime deterrent. Criminals will avoid a home if someone is in the residence.
And no money is usually exchanged between the home owner and the house sitter!
Sounds awesome right?
Next, let’s look at some of the benefits of house sitting:
Benefits Of House Sitting
There are so many benefits of house sitting, and the following are just some I found after being a house sitter for over 2 years:
First, here are some benefits for home owners:

And here are some benefits for house sitters:

So, in case you want to try house sitting, how should you get started?
How To Get Started With House Sitting?
Most people start their housesitting journey online. And today there are so many different house sitting websites to choose from. But sadly, many service does not not offer the kind of protection that you would expect, both for the home owner and house sitter.

Welcome to my in-depth and honest Housecarers Review!
My Comprehensive Housecarers Review
Housecarers is a site that connects people who are looking for housesitters with people looking to house sit. It’s particularly great if you’re searching for a house in the United States, Europe or Australia.
In my opinion, Housecarers is the best option for getting started with housesitting, no matter if you are looking to house sit a few times per year, or planning to housesit full time. They are one the biggest resources and one of the most popular house sitting websites available as of today.
Now, let’s have a closer look at their pros and cons:
Housecarers Review: Advantages
Let’s start with the best features of Housecarers, how to use them, and why they are better than other house sitting websites.
1. One Of The Oldest & Largest House Sitting Websites
Housecarers has been matching homeowners with house sitters worldwide since October 2000.
That’s a lot of time. And during that time they successfully connected thousands of people, saved people a ton of money on accommodation and pet care, and created lasting memories and friendship.
In addition, House Carers is not only one of the oldest house sitting websites – they are also one of the largest. On an average day there are hundreds of homes available, all over the world.
Just don’t take my word for it. Go to the housecarers login and Check it out!
And this cannot be overstated. You want the odds to be in your favor. And it’s especially great for home owners, because they have much more sitters than homes, so you always have plenty of reputable applicants to choose from.
2. One Of The Lowest Prices In The Industry
Most other house sitting websites charge well over $100 per year. But Housecarers has a membership fee of only $50 per year which puts them firmly in the lower end of the cost spectrum.
And for home owners it’s 100% free!
Considering the huge number of listings, and the amount of money you will save, Housecarers is truly one of the best house sitting websites available as of today!
3. Easy To Use Website
The Housecarers web site is intuitive and with a clear design. Searching for homes is easy, as you can filter by country, date and length of the stay. Small icons next to the listings indicates what animals are in the home, and if the home has any photos (which they often do).
A benefit with Housecarers compared to other house sitting websites is that once a home owner accepts a sitter through the site, that listing is immediately closed for other applicants.
This is what the search function for house sitters looks like:
And this is what a typical home listing looks like:
Also, home owners can search for housesitters by location and dates. You can narrow the search by pet experience, references, gender, and if they are a couple or single. In case you don’t want to put up a listing, but prefer to contact housesitters directly, this is a great feature.
In addition, Housecarers sends out a daily list of new house sitters. This make it easy to be updated with the sitters who are available for you. In addition, they will make sure the list is personalized to match your criteria.
And for house sitters, applying for a home is as easy as clicking the button, and then sending a tailored message.
4. Many Useful Tools – For Example A Ready Made Contract
The ready made contract is one of the best features of Housecarers, as it will save time and headache for both sitters and homeowners. Just download the contract, and modify it to suit you and the other parties exact needs. This is offered at no extra cost.
In addition, home owners can easily browse through the house sitters credentials, history and any police background checks. And using the convenient filters make it easy to create a short list of potential house sitters.
5. Excellent Security And Identity Protection
Housecarers has some great privacy and security features. For example, they will make sure the privacy of both the home owner and the house sitter is protected at all times. And all communication is done through their confidential message system to preserve your privacy and security.
Excellent security has always been an important pillar for house carers, and you can fully trust them with your personal information.
6. Housecarers Doesn’t Require Unnecessary & Extensive Background Checks
Unlike some other house sitting websites, house carers doesn’t require a police background check. However, there’s a verification section where you can add one if you like, but they won’t block you from using their service without one.
In my opinion, a police background check doesn’t really equal a trust check. Just because someone doesn’t have a criminal record, doesn’t mean that they will be a great housesitter. It’s really up to the involved parties to communicate the needs and expectations.
Don’t get me wrong. I really appreciate that house carers gives us the option to include our verification and background checks. And, I only been asked once to provide a background check, and while I did sent it, it felt a bit like I was guilty until proven innocent. However, I will continue to provide my background check to anyone who ask me.
Housecarers Review: Disadvantages
I am not going to lie and sugarcoat in this review. Housecarers.com is far from perfect, and there’s room for improvements.
Now, let’s have a closer look at the negative things about the house carers service:
1. More House Sitters Than Home Owners
While it’s a good thing that Housecarers is a popular and large site, it can also be a disadvantage. Especially when you’re new to the platform. I remember the feeling when you are up against 10 other experienced people for a particular home. Sometimes it felt like you were ready to give up.
However, I decided to choose some less competitive destinations first, and putting time into creating a killer profile. Hence, I slowly started building my reputation on the site. And today, there are really no issues getting accepted. But, this initial hurdle may turn some people off.
2. Offers Outside United States, Europe & Australia Is Limited
House sitting is only big in the western world. And this issue is not limited to housecarers.com. It’s valid for all house sitting websites.
And this may cause issues if you’re planning a trip to Asia or South America.
However, the site does have homes in those regions, but not as frequent compared to the more “developed” part of the world. That being said, I had luck in the past finding great homes on my Asia trips. It just takes a bit more work than usual.
Housecarers Review 2018: Summary
Alright, let’s sum up the pros and cons I found:
- One of the oldest and biggest house sitting sites.
- One of the lowest prices in the industry.
- Free to use for home owners
- Easy and intuitive website.
- Many useful tools like a ready made contract.
- No background checks are necessary.
- Excellent security and identity protection.
- High competition for house sitters, especially in the beginning before you have a reputation.
- The offers outside USA, Europe and Australia is limited.
Housecarers Review 2018: Conclusion
And that’s a wrap folks!
For home owners, Housecarers is a no-brainer. It’s free, a perfect match for your needs, and has everything you need to get started, with an endless stream of house sitters willing to watch your home and pets.
And if you are thinking of being a house sitter, Housecarers is really the best option to get you started. Despite it’s flaws, it’s still the best house sitting website as of today. The other house sitting sites just don’t have the low price ($50/year), the huge database of available homes, the safety, and the user experience that Housecarers has.
Whether you are looking for a a 6 months vacation in Australia, a 1 month stay in France, or a 1 weeklong trip to Florida, Housecarers will get you there for a cost that’s far below what a hotel or Airbnb can offer.
It’s really the best house sitting web site of 2018, and one of the most trusted items in my travel tool box (alongside Uber, XE and DuoLingo)
