World Nomads Travel Insurance Review

So you packed your bags, booked the hotel, and are about to take a taxi to the airport.

But wait. You just remember you haven’t purchased travel insurance yet!

But then you ask yourself: “Do I really need travel insurance? Nothing ever happens on my trips!

No doubt, that may very well be true. However, there are always external factors beyond our control. And those external factors can seriously derail even the most well planned itinerary.

I like to say that dealing with the unexpected is a big part of traveling. From an inconvenient glitch to a serious medical emergency, it’s always a good idea to buy insurance that will protect you from any unexpected event that could easily empty your bank account.

As someone who has traveled the world for over 20 years, I have witnessed many tragic events ranging from broken legs, stomach illnesses to motorbike accidents. Sadly, many of those travelers didn’t had proper insurance coverage. Either they never heard about travel insurance, or weren’t willing to spend the extra money on a policy.

Don’t be that person!

But, since you found your way here, I assume you’re a responsible person who is serious about your safety and well being. And that you’re looking for a good insurance plan.

And to help you in your search, I’ve written an article about the travel insurance company I had for years now:

Let’s dive right into my World Nomads travel insurance review!

Who Is World Nomads ?

World Nomads is very different from other travel insurance companies. It’s founder, Simon Monk, traveled the world extensively in the 80s and 90s and got a first hand look of all the issues with travel insurances.

To solve these issues, he launched World Nomads in 2002 – a travel insurance company built by travelers for travelers. His aim was to provide backpackers with a comprehensive, flexible and affordable insurance plan.

Since then, World Nomads has grown and is today available in over 140 countries. It’s built for adventurous travelers and backpackers and covers medical, evacuation, trip cancellation, lost luggage and a myriad of adventure sports.

What You Get With World Nomads Travel Insurance?

First, let’s have a  look at the policy overview taken from their web page, and then talk about each item in more details:

World Nomads Policy Overview (US Citizen)

Emergency Accident And Sickness Medical Expense

Medical emergency is one of the most important parts of any travel insurance. And you won’t lose any sleep with the World Nomads Travel Insurance. It covers accidental injuries that occurs and is treated during the trip.

The price and coverage depends on where you live, where you plan to travel and the length of your trip. And the easiest way is to use the quote tool below to get immediate information and pricing. As an example, if you live in the US, you’re covered up to $100,00 for medical emergencies on their Standard plan.

In addition, you are covered for any Emergency dental treatments that occurs during the trip.

Emergency Evacuation And Repatriation

In most places around the world, a medical evacuation can be very expensive. $30,000 is not an unusual cost. Unless you have rich parents, paying that kind of money will just not be possible. So don’t be one of those people I see on my Facebook asking money for their GoFund page.

But World Nomads got your back! US citizens on their Standard plan are covered up to $300,000 for any medical evacuation ($500,000 on their Explorer plan).

Apart from the emergency evacuation coverage, you will also have coverage for the following events:

  • Transportation for someone to join you If you’re traveling alone and are in a hospital alone for more than 7 consecutive days, someone chosen by you can be brought for a single visit.
  • Return of minors Children traveling with you will be flown home if you’re hospitalized for more than 7 days.
  • Repatriation of remains Coverage for reasonable expenses to return your remains if you die during the trip.
  • Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation Coverage for home transportation if there’s civil or political unrest in a country. Furthermore, you will be transported home in case of an eligible natural disaster. Or if you’re expelled from a country.

Trip Cancellation, Interruption And Delay

Changing plans is just part of life. But World Nomads got your back once again! If you must cancel your trip because of sickness or an accidental injury, they will reimburse you for any non-refundable cancellation charges.

In addition, they will also reimburse you for any additional expenses if you have to interrupt your trip because of any type of accident, injury or death of a family member.

Finally, if you’re delayed for more than 6 hours, World Nomads will reimburse you for any unused portion of your pre-paid accommodation.

In many ways, this is the most valuable thing about the whole policy. And you will probably use this coverage more than any of the medical ones. Especially if you’re planning to travel in parts of the world that has weak consumer protection (more or less everywhere outside the west). Or planning to travel using low cost airlines, which pretty much has zero money back guarantee.

Luggage Delays And Loss

Another great thing about the World Nomads travel insurance is their coverage for luggage loss, delays or theft. US citizens are covered up to $500 per item on their Standard plan (their Explorer plan has coverage up to $1,500 per item).

In addition, World Nomads will reimburse you for the purchase of necessary personal effects, if your luggage is delayed for more than 12 hours (up to a maximum of $750).

Coverage For Many Adventure Sports and activities

From bungee jumping in South Africa to whitewater rafting in Northern California, World Nomads covers over 200 adventure activities, giving you peace of mind to get the most from your travels.

24-Hour Emergency Assistance

Another amazing feature of World Nomads Travel Insurance is The One Call Assistance Service. It’s a team of multi-lingual insurance professionals who are available 24/7 to give you help and advice. They will also help you locate physicians, dentists or hospitals. And if needed, even arrange and pay for transportation including an escort.

Flexibility When You Need It Most

Had a change of plans? You can buy more coverage or make claims online while you’re still on the road. And you can even buy a World Nomads policy if you’re already travelling.

World Nomads Travel Insurance Review – Final Words

In my opinion, the World Nomads Travel Insurance stands out in several key areas. First, it’s flexibility. You can easily extend, file claims or buy new coverage while you’re already on the road. Secondly, World Nomads is unique in it’s coverage of adventure activities. With over 200 activities covered you can ensure they have your back no matter if you plan to do Bungee Jumping, Horseback Riding or Jet Skiing. Furthermore, they have some very competitive prices and one of the best customer services in the industry, with 24/7 emergency assistance.

Of course, there are also some not so great things about the World Nomads Travel Insurance. For example, they don’t sell insurances to individuals over 70 years old. And they don’t cover any pre-existing medical conditions.

Other than that, World Nomads is one of the best travel insurance companies today. Especially for backpackers or long term world travelers.

I love my World Nomads Travel Insurance!
